Archaeologist (Spatial Analysis), Intervention & Analysis
About
My main interests are the archaeology and history of medieval English settlement and fortification, Domesday Book, GIS and spatial analysis. In particular, I hope to develop a comprehensive GIS of the placename, landholding and statistical information recorded in Domesday Book.
Much of my time is spent working excavation projects mandated by English Heritage's corporate aims and objectives, as well as contributing to the development and use of an integrated digital recording system for excavation projects called Intrasis. I also advise colleagues within and without English Heritage on the use of GIS and spatial analysis, and contribute to the review of research funding bids submitted to English Heritage.
My most recent completed project is a GIS-ready data derived from the maps of 19th century rural settlement and terrain originally published in Brian K Roberts and Stuart Wrathmell’s An Atlas of Rural Settlement in England (London: English Heritage, corrected reprint 2003). The spatial and attribute data that can be used in GIS software and viewed in ‘geobrowsers’ like the Google Earth* mapping service. The data collection can be downloaded here: http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/professional/research/archaeology/a
To get a copy of the data collection on CD, please contact the Enquiry and Research Services Team at the National Monuments Record (nmrinfo@english-heritage.org.uk), though you will probably have to pay a 'postage and packing' fee. In addition, all of the Historic Environment Records (HERs), Sites and Monuments Records (SMRs) and Urban Archaeological Databases (UADs) in England using GIS software have been sent copies of the Atlas GIS data collection, so it may be possible to consult it at your local HER.
